Macon Water Authority (MWA) Hosting 17th Annual Ocmulgee Alive!

Company News

The Macon Water Authority (MWA) and its Macon Water Alliance, in partnership with Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful and Macon-Bibb Parks and Recreation, will be hosting the 17th Annual Ocmulgee Alive! river cleanup on Saturday Oct. 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Volunteers without a preassigned location to clean up can meet at the Spring Street boat ramp. Other cleanup locations include: Vineville Branch in Riverside Cemetery, Rocky Creek Road, Joe Tamplin Boulevard, Williamson Road, and Beaverdam Creek near Sheraton Drive.

This year’s participating organizations in Ocmulgee Alive! include Mount de Sales Academy, Stratford Academy, Tattnall Square Academy, Royal Science Club, and the Riverside Cemetery and Conservancy. YKK once again is a corporate sponsor, which makes the 15th year the company has sponsored or participated in Ocmulgee Alive!

Ocmulgee Alive! is affiliated with the statewide Rivers Alive campaign, which is a Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) Outreach Program. Rivers Alive is Georgia’s annual waterway cleanup, which targets all water bodies in the state, including creeks, streams, rivers, lakes/reservoirs, beaches, and wetlands.

The objective of all cleanup events affiliated with Georgia Rivers Alive, such as Ocmulgee Alive!, is to create awareness of and involvement in the preservation of water resources, while locally recognizing the importance of water quality to the economic development and quality of life in Macon-Bibb County.

In addition to being a popular source of outdoor recreation, the Ocmulgee River is a primary source, along with Javors Lucas Lake, of raw water for producing MWA tap water – voted Best Tasting Drinking Water in Georgia this year.

For more information on this year’s Ocmulgee Alive!, volunteers can contact Natalie McEver, MWA Supervisor of Environmental Compliance, at 478-283-8108, or by emailing nmcever@maconwater.org; or A.J. Hopkins, MWA Manager of Environmental Compliance, at 478-464-5678, or by emailing AHopkins@maconwater.org or Ocmulgee_alive@maconwater.org.
