How to Check for Water Leaks Using a Neptune Water Meter

Company News

1. Locate the Meter: Find your water meter. It is usually located outside, near the curb, in a box on the ground.

2. Ensure No Water is Being Used: Turn off all taps, showers, and water-using appliances, and make sure no water is being used inside or outside your home.

3. Open the Meter Box: Carefully open the meter box using a tool like a screwdriver. Be cautious of insects or debris inside.

4. Read the Meter: Take note of the current reading on the meter’s register. This is usually a series of numbers similar to an odometer in a car. Identify the leak indicator on the meter. This is often a tiny triangular dial or a small red or black disc that spins when water is flowing through the meter.

5. Observe the Leak Indicator: Watch the leak indicator for at least 5 minutes. If it is spinning, even very slowly, it indicates that water is moving through the meter, and you likely have a leak somewhere in your system.

6. Check for Small Leaks: Write down the meter reading for smaller leaks and wait for 1-2 hours without using any water. After this period, reread the meter. If the numbers have changed, you have a leak.

7. Check the Flow Indicator: Some Neptune meters have a flow indicator needle. If the needle is moving when all water usage is off, it indicates a leak.

8. Inspect Your Property: If a leak is indicated, inspect your property for visible signs of water leaks, such as damp spots on walls, floors, ceilings, and wet areas in your yard.

9. Check Toilets and Faucets: Common sources of leaks include toilets and faucets. Add a few drops of food coloring to your toilet tank and wait 15 minutes. If the color appears in the bowl, the toilet is leaking.

10. Contact a Professional: If you cannot locate the leak or need assistance, contact a licensed plumber or your water utility for help.

Remember, not all leaks are visible at first. By following these steps, you can effectively check for water leaks in your home and take necessary actions to fix any issues.
